Vietnam’s Aviation On-Time Performance Declines in January 2025

Vietnam’s Aviation On-Time Performance Declines in January 2025

According to preliminary statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, the average on-time performance (OTP) rate for the entire aviation industry in January 2025 was only 60%, a decrease of 7.7 percentage points compared to the peak Tet holiday month of February 2024.

Bamboo Airways Leads in On-Time Performance

Despite the overall decline in on-time rates, some airlines maintained operational performance above the average. Bamboo Airways had the highest on-time rate, achieving 84.3% of flights on time in January 2025.

Airlines with on-time rates above the industry average include:

  • Pacific Airlines: 74.9%
  • Vietnam Airlines: 69%
  • VASCO: 68.5%

Meanwhile, Vietravel Airlines achieved 57.2%, while Vietjet Air had the lowest rate with 46.8% of flights on time.

Slight Increase in Cancellation Rate

In January 2025, the average cancellation rate for the entire industry was 0.5%, an increase of 0.3 percentage points compared to February 2024.

The airlines with the highest cancellation rates included:

  • VASCO: 1.1%
  • Vietnam Airlines: 0.8%
  • Vietravel Airlines: 0.5%

Conversely, some airlines had lower cancellation rates:

  • Bamboo Airways: 0.4%
  • Vietjet Air: 0.2%
  • Pacific Airlines: 0.1%

Reasons for the Decline in On-Time Performance

According to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, there are two main reasons for the delays in January 2025:

  1. Infrastructure overload due to a record increase in passenger traffic during the Tet holiday, particularly at Tan Son Nhat Airport (Ho Chi Minh City). In just 9 days during Tet, the total passenger transport volume reached 2.5 million, including:
    • International passengers: 1.35 million (up 23% from the previous year).
    • Domestic passengers: 1.14 million (up 12%).
  2. Adverse weather conditions, such as fog and low clouds at some northern regional airports, disrupted operations.

Efforts to Improve Service Quality

In light of these common challenges, airlines have implemented various modern solutions to optimize on-time performance.

Bamboo Airways’ General Director, Mr. Luong Hoai Nam, stated: “We have implemented a series of synchronized solutions to improve operational processes, aiming to enhance our on-time performance. This reflects the determination and strong efforts of all staff to provide the best flying experience for passengers during the new year.”

The aviation transport situation in the coming months is expected to remain at a high level, requiring airlines to continue optimizing operations and improving service quality to meet passenger travel demands.
