Hanoi, March 25 – Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet, two major airlines in Vietnam, have announced a ban on the use of power banks during flights. Passengers are required to remove power banks from their carry-on luggage and place them in a visible location throughout the flight.

ICAO and IATA Regulations

Vietnam Airlines emphasized that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have strict regulations regarding lithium batteries. These batteries must be transported according to safety guidelines to prevent fire hazards.

Under these regulations, lithium batteries, including power banks, are not allowed in checked baggage. They are only permitted in carry-on luggage due to potential risks during transportation.

Vietnam Airlines’ Requirements

Vietnam Airlines advises passengers to take lithium batteries out of their carry-on luggage and keep them in an easily visible location. Passengers are not allowed to charge devices from USB ports on the plane or use power banks for charging.

Passengers may bring lithium batteries under 100Wh in their carry-on baggage, with a maximum of 20 units, including spare batteries and those installed in devices. Batteries between 100Wh and 160Wh require airline approval before boarding, with a limit of two units. Batteries over 160Wh or those that are damaged or swollen are strictly prohibited.

Vietjet’s Regulations

Following Directive 1027/CT-CHK issued on February 26, 2025, by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, Vietjet requires passengers to remove power banks from carry-on luggage and keep them in a visible location. Passengers are not allowed to plug in or use power banks for charging during flights.

The airline advises passengers to fully charge their personal electronic devices before boarding. Power banks must be carried in hand luggage and are not permitted in checked baggage.

Fire Hazards from Lithium Batteries

In recent years, multiple incidents of power banks catching fire in carry-on luggage have been reported. As a result, some airlines in the region and worldwide have banned the use of power banks during flights. These strict regulations are designed to ensure passenger and flight safety.

Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have implemented these measures to enhance flight safety. Passengers must comply with the new rules to prevent hazards and ensure a secure travel experience.
