ICAO and IATA Regulations
Vietnam Airlines emphasized that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) have strict regulations regarding lithium batteries. These batteries must be transported according to specific guidelines to prevent fire and explosion risks.
According to regulations, lithium batteries, including power banks, are not allowed in checked baggage. They are only permitted in carry-on luggage due to potential hazards during transport.
Vietnam Airlines’ Requirements
Vietnam Airlines advises passengers to remove lithium batteries from their carry-on luggage and keep them in a visible location. Passengers are prohibited from charging devices via USB ports on the aircraft or using power banks to charge their devices.
The airline allows passengers to carry lithium batteries under 100Wh in their carry-on luggage, with a maximum of 20 units, including both spare and installed batteries. Batteries between 100Wh and 160Wh require prior airline approval, with a limit of two units. Batteries over 160Wh, as well as damaged or swollen batteries, are strictly prohibited.
Vietjet’s Regulations
Based on Directive 1027/CT-CHK issued by the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam on February 26, 2025, Vietjet requires passengers to remove power banks from their carry-on luggage and place them in a visible location. Passengers are not allowed to plug in or use power banks to charge devices during the flight.
The airline advises passengers to fully charge their devices before boarding. Power banks must be carried in hand luggage and are strictly prohibited from being checked in.
Fire and Explosion Risks from Lithium Batteries
In recent years, several incidents of power bank-related fires and explosions in carry-on luggage have occurred. Some airlines have already banned the use of power banks on flights. These strict regulations aim to ensure the safety of flights and passengers.
Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet have implemented these measures to enhance flight safety. Passengers must comply with the new regulations to prevent risks
