MSDS in Air Freight
Air freight is growing rapidly. Goods are transported quickly and safely. However, some items require strict control. These include hazardous, flammable, and corrosive goods. When transporting such items, a mandatory document is the MSDS.
MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet. In Vietnamese, it means the Chemical Safety Instruction Sheet. This document describes the properties of the goods. It outlines risks, handling methods, and safety precautions. MSDS is not only used in production. It is also mandatory in air transport.
An MSDS usually ranges from 2 to 16 pages. Its content is standardized under international systems. Airlines, airports, and customs authorities all require it. Without it, shipments can be rejected.
What types of goods require an MSDS?
Not all goods need an MSDS. It mainly applies to chemicals. For example: cleaning solutions, paints, perfumes, aerosols… Additionally, some batteries and electronic devices require an MSDS. Why? Because they can generate heat, explode, or leak.
Even cosmetics may require an MSDS. If they contain alcohol or volatile substances, they must be declared. Air transport does not tolerate potential risks. Safety is always the top priority.
Main content of an MSDS
A standard MSDS has 16 sections. Below are some key items:
-
Product name and manufacturer
-
Chemical composition
-
Hazard levels
-
First aid measures
-
Spill handling instructions
-
Transport info and hazard classification
-
Applicable regulations (IATA, ICAO…)
The information must be clear and understandable. MSDSs are usually written in English. Some carriers accept bilingual versions.
Role of MSDS in air freight
MSDS helps determine whether the cargo is dangerous. It forms the basis for classification and packaging. This informs airlines how to arrange goods. Flammable items must be kept away from heat sources. Lithium batteries cannot be near food or live animals.
MSDS is also vital in emergencies. If leakage occurs, staff know how to respond. They know whether to wear gloves, masks, or use specific fire extinguishers.
Who provides the MSDS?
Usually, the product manufacturer provides the MSDS. If not available, the sender must request one. Sometimes, logistics companies help obtain it. However, never write or edit the MSDS yourself.
Some providers offer fake or incorrect MSDSs. This can lead to serious consequences. Goods may be rejected, and senders fined. In severe cases, they may face a flight ban.

Can MSDS replace DGD?
No. MSDS and DGD (Dangerous Goods Declaration) are different. MSDS is a technical document. DGD is a declaration signed by the shipper. Some goods require both documents. MSDS cannot replace DGD.
MSDS helps identify dangerous goods. If the item is non-hazardous, MSDS is enough. If classified as hazardous, DGD and special packaging are needed.
Does MSDS need to be valid?
Yes. An MSDS is valid for 3–5 years. If expired, airlines may reject it. It must include clear contact details: company name, address, phone, and email.
Some carriers require stamps or logos. Blurry scans or poor copies may be rejected.
When should you check the MSDS?
Check it as soon as you plan to ship. Don’t wait until goods reach the airport. Early checking saves time. It also helps handle risks in advance.
Some airlines offer free MSDS checks. They have DGR teams to review MSDSs. If the document is invalid, they will guide you to fix it.
How does MSDS benefit the shipper?
MSDS shows responsibility and transparency. It proves the shipper understands their cargo. It also helps avoid fines for violations.
Without an MSDS, shipments can be detained. Storage fees and late delivery penalties are costly. MSDS helps cargo clear customs and fly on schedule.
Conclusion
MSDS is a crucial document in air transport. It acts as a passport for special cargo. Without it, shipments are likely to be rejected.
MSDS must be prepared early, accurately, and completely. It must not be faked or carelessly handled. A good MSDS protects the goods, the shipper, and the flight.
If you ship frequently, learn about MSDS thoroughly. It’s the first step to ensuring your cargo flies safely.
